RICHARD H. COHN SR., FOUNDER OF COHN CORPORATION, AWARDED THE ORDER OF THE PALMETTO

September 2025

Columbia, SC, September 11, 2025 – Richard H. Cohn Sr., Founder and Chairman of Cohn Corporation, has been awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, by Gov. Henry McMaster. The recognition was presented during a ceremony on September 4, 2025, in acknowledgement of Cohn’s lifetime of service, leadership and lasting contributions to the State of South Carolina.

The Order of the Palmetto, established in 1971 by Gov. John C. West, is reserved for citizens whose lives are distinguished by extraordinary achievement, service and dedication to improving the lives of others across the State.

For more than 50 years, Richard has united professional excellence with a strong commitment to civic service.  Cohn has constructed more than 15 million square feet through his first company, Cohn Construction, which he founded in 1993.  Today, in addition to construction, the organization includes development, property and asset management.

Cohn’s impact extends well beyond business. He currently serves as chairman-at-large of South Carolina ETV and has held leadership roles with the City of Columbia Planning Commission, South Carolina Philharmonic, Congaree Vista Guild, City Center Partnership, and President of the Tree of Life Congregation. Alongside his wife, Debbie, he has supported Columbia’s arts community, most notably through the Richard and Debbie Cohn Side Door Theatre, as well as being previously awarded the Palmetto Patriot Award in 2011.

Governor McMaster said, “Richard Cohn has spent his life building opportunities, strengthening communities, and enriching our state’s culture. His leadership and generosity reflect the very best of South Carolina. I have come to know Richard as not only a successful businessman, but also a dedicated community leader, and it is a privilege to present him with the Order of the Palmetto.”

“I am deeply honored to receive the Order of the Palmetto. South Carolina has given me, my family, and my company so much, and it has been my privilege to give back through my work and service,” said Richard Cohn. “This award is a reflection of the many people, organizations, and communities I’ve had the honor of working with over the years, and I am grateful to continue contributing to the future of our state.”
